Program Notes:

Martin Ellerby (b. 1957) was born in Worksop, England and studied with Joseph Horowitz, W.S. Lloyd Webber, and Wilfred Josephs. He has received the Arts Council Dio Fund Award for young composers, an Allcard Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, and various composer-in-residencies, resulting in many commissions. In 1988 he was appointed Professor of Music at the London College of Music.

Paris Sketches is a four movement tribute to the French capital and was commissioned by the British Association of Symphonic bands and Wind Ensembles Consortium Scheme. Each movement pays homage to some part of Paris and to other composers who lived, worked or passed through the city. The presence of bells - a prominent feature of Parisian life - runs through the work as a unifying theme.

Movement 1: Saint-Germain-Des-Pres
"Saint-Germain-des-Pres" is the Latin Quarter, famous for its artistic associations and bohemian life-style. This is a dawn tableau haunted by the shade of Ravel: the city awakens with the ever-present sound of morning bells.

Movement 2: Pigalle
"Pigalle" is the Soho of Paris, a burlesque with scenes cast in the mold of a balletic scherzo - humorous in a kind of "Stravinksy [sic] meets Prokofiev" way. The bells here are car horns and police sirens!

Movement 3: Pere Lachaise
"Pere Lachaise" is the city's largest cemetery, the final resting place of many a celebrity who had once walked its streets. The movement concludes with a quotation of the "Dies Irae" chant. The mood is one of softness and delicacy; the bells are gentle, nostalgic, and wistful.

Movement 4: Les Halles
"Les Halles" is the old market area, a Parisian Covent Garden. The bells are triumphant and celebratory. The climax quotes from Berlioz's "Te Deum", which was first performed in 1855 at the church of St. Eustache - actually in the district of Les Halles.
