Conductor News

Dear Musicians and Friends of the Community,

This season is going to be an exciting one! As I study scores of music for our upcoming Old Bill’s concert, it only makes me more anxious to bring to life the music written with a group of talented and driven musicians. Since I’ve joined the Jackson Hole Community Band last year as a percussionist, my life in Jackson has been given a purpose.

As the new director of the band, my goal is to bring a new energy and artistic style to the group that still retains the same fun environment I came into over a year ago. I feel that Old Bills is great to start off the season because it will have that familiar excitement right off the bat. When the Halloween concert music comes into play, I feel the group will be ready to take on some new ideas. I’ve already picked a piece that features a great number of musical effects, including my personal favorite, the water gong. There will also be a piece by P.D.Q. Bach that brings a very humorous and unexpected take on band music. Further down the road, I hope to find a piece that involves electronics.

I have no doubt 2016-17 is going to be a fun season! With the support of friends, family and community, it’s a no-brainer.

Cheers,
-Zach Singer

Rehearsals begin this Thursday, August 25th, 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm Center for the Arts, upstairs in the performing arts wing.

2016 Rehearsals Begin

Do you play a wind instrument or percussion, did you in High school? If you can read music and have some experience please dust off your instrument, there is no time like now to join your Community Band. 2016 JHCB Rehearsals begin Thursday January 14th at 7pm, newcomers, walk-ins, and visitors are always welcome.

We are a family of musicians with day jobs that play music together for the joy of it. All volunteers, we hail from backgrounds as diverse as engineering, law, real estate, and the service industry and range in age from early-teens to the eighties. Many of our members have had a 20 to 30 year gap when they joined the band.

This is a perfect time to join our band, we will be rehearsing for our spring concert, “A night at the Movies”. Our conductor has selected a variety of music to challenge all abilities. You will recognize the music and have several weeks to learn your part. [Click to see what’s in our rehearsal folder]

You don’t have to be intimidated by the difficulty of the music because there is likely someone else who is very good playing the same part as you.  If you are just getting back into it after many years you will be put on a part that is doubled by someone more experienced.

Our conductor says “Play what you can, practice when you feel inspired, and sit out what’s too hard.”

The stuff that’s too hard won’t stay that way for very long if you stick with us.

Do you have a busy schedule? We are very organized, once you become a member you will be added to our member mailing list. You will receive reminders about rehearsals, information about upcoming events, and important JHCB related information. The mailing list is managed by a band member, you will not get spammed.

Is your job stressful? There is no better stress relief than playing music… lines and dots.

Do you live in one of the surrounding communities? We have a group of members that drives the canyon every week, a few members drive the pass, and we even have a couple members who drive from Idaho Falls to play music with us.

Don’t have your instrument? We have percussion and a few student quality wind instruments. The wind instruments can be loaned out until you can have your instruments shipped to you.

Don’t think your remember how to read music? Ask any member, it comes back. Quicker than you think.

What is the commitment?

We hope you will like participating our group enough to come all the time, of course. But  it isn’t about making every rehearsal or even every performance. It’s about rekindling a love for music, meeting new friends, and having a good time! We don’t expect anyone to commit their lives to us, just like we don’t expect anyone to be professional musicians.
