The Alto Flute is a member of the Western concert flute family, pitched in G—sounding a perfect fourth below the standard C flute. It produces a warm, mellow, and rich tone that blends beautifully with other woodwinds and adds depth to concert band and wind ensemble arrangements. The instrument is longer than the standard flute, with a wider bore, which contributes to its distinctive timbre. Alto flutes are often used in lyrical passages, slow movements, or to provide harmonic support in ensemble textures.

The Alto Flute is rarely used in our ensemble, but when it appears—like in our arrangement of the Star Wars Trilogy—it adds a unique, warm depth to the woodwind section. Its mellow tone enriches the overall ensemble sound, giving select pieces a special color and texture.
