Strings

Home / Glossary / 6. Strings / Strings

Strings are a family of musical instruments that produce sound by vibrating strings, either through bowing, plucking, or striking. This family includes instruments such as the violin, viola, cello, double bass, and harp, and can also extend to less common or hybrid stringed instruments in ensemble settings. String instruments are essential in orchestras, concert bands, and chamber ensembles, providing a rich harmonic foundation, lyrical melodies, and a wide dynamic range. They are typically categorized by size, range, and role within the ensemble, from the high-pitched, agile violins to the deep, resonant double basses. Strings can perform both melodic and rhythmic functions, often bridging the tonal and textural elements of the ensemble.
