Tuba

The tuba is the powerhouse of the brass family—deep, bold, and essential. As the lowest voice in the brass section, it anchors the sound from the bottom up, giving weight and stability to everything above it. Tubas come in different sizes and keys (BB♭, CC, Eb, F), using piston or rotary valves depending on design. Despite its size, it can move with surprising speed and flexibility when needed.

Whether braving a frosty morning at ElkFest or bringing the foundation indoors, our tuba players deliver steady, unmistakable presence—rain, shine, or snow.

Fun Facts

  • The tuba can weigh around 20–30 pounds, similar to carrying a packed carry-on suitcase.
  • The earliest versions of the tuba didn’t exist yet as we know it—early low brass instruments like the serpent were made of wood and shaped in long, winding curves with finger holes instead of valves.
  • In early New Orleans jazz, tubas were often used outdoors because they could survive weather and rough conditions that made string basses unreliable at the time.
  • Some of the largest experimental tubas ever built pushed extreme scale, including historical display instruments reaching over 10 feet tall with many dozens of feet of tubing.
  • Tuba playing relies on sustained air control, and professional players can support long phrases using advanced breathing techniques that extend a single continuous note well beyond what most wind instruments require.

Common Names

  • Tuba (standard orchestral and concert band term)
